Schematic illustrating the experimental design of the study. Fifteen healthy adult subjects (7 males and 8 females) were selected from a clinically monitored Sardinian population. Stool samples were collected from each individual and subjected in parallel to Illumina shotgun DNA sequencing (metagenome profiling) and LTQ-Orbitrap shotgun mass spectrometry analysis (metaproteome profiling). The metagenomes were also employed as sequences databases, in order to allow a rigorous metaproteome/metagenome comparison, and subjected to taxonomic and functional annotation
